What led you to this role?
A former colleague raved about NHS Shared Business Services, so I decided to take a leap. I started at the bottom and worked my way up. Nearly five years later, I’m still here - and I can honestly say it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Has your experience of working here matched what you were expecting?
Working here has exceeded what I expected. When I first joined NHS SBS, I had no idea what procurement even meant. I came from a background in customer service but I’m so glad I took a chance and made the change.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I really enjoy working in this team. It's very customer focused, and you really get to see how your work has an impact on the NHS. I collaborate with subject matter experts, clinicians, and trust staff, and I get to witness firsthand how our procurement efforts support the NHS.
The flexibility is another huge plus. I work remotely, which has made such a difference to my wellbeing and productivity. I used to spend 12 hours a day out of the house, commuting and working long shifts. Now, I can go to the gym in the morning, walk my dogs during my lunch, and still deliver high-quality work. I’m trusted to manage my own time, and that autonomy makes a big difference.

What do you think makes NHS SBS different from other companies in the industry?
I think what really sets NHS SBS apart from other companies is the culture. We’re not micromanaged; we’re trusted. There’s a strong focus on wellbeing, and the company genuinely supports work-life balance. I’ve even been able to participate in the Manchester Half Marathon, with the organisation covering the entry fee as part of our charity and wellness initiatives.
The benefits are great too, I regularly buy extra holiday days, and there are perks like dental plans, car schemes, and a benefits hub full of discounts.

Would you recommend working here to others?
I’ve already recommended NHS SBS to several people, and many of them now work here across different departments. It’s a place where you’re valued, supported, and given room to grow. I’ve been here five years, and I have no plans to leave anytime soon.
Since joining, I’ve held four different roles, each one building on the last. I started as a Procurement Partner, moved into a Category Buyer role in the Digital IT team, then became a Category Manager in Business Services, and now I’m a Procurement Manager. Along the way, I’ve completed my CIPS Level 4 and am planning to pursue Level 5 and a PRINCE2 qualification. NHS SBS has supported me at every step - not just with funding for qualifications, but also with study days and exam leave.
