Hear from Nazmina,

a General Ledger Analyst

I'm Nazmina. As a General Ledger Analyst, my role involves preparing monthly interim and final reconciliation packs, initiating monthly payroll deductions, and managing third-party pay overs. I run reports, extract and analyse data using spreadsheets and statistical techniques, and respond to and resolve queries. I also conduct monthly client calls to ensure smooth communication and service delivery.

What led you to this role?

I went to university to study Accounting and Finance and then went on to do my ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). The road to where I am now wasn’t plain sailing, as I was made redundant from my training contract and I struggled to find my footing. I therefore began volunteering to get some finance experience to make me more employable.
After this, the jobs I held were predominantly in finance but not where I wanted to be as they were more purchase ledger, invoicing and basic accounting roles. I never gave up; I was resilient and had faith that everything would work out.

I have been with NHS SBS for over two years now and the main reason I joined was due to the work-life balance offered. Being a mum of two young children, I needed a role that worked around my family life. The diverse workforce here and the development opportunities to further my career within finance were all the reasons that attracted me to this role. Here at NHS SBS, I absolutely love my job. It comes with variety, it’s within mainstream finance and it gives me the work-life balance I need.

What do you enjoy about your role?

Our team is amazing we all support and empower each other; we have great managers supporting us and personal development is encouraged. There is never a dull moment - there is variety in our workload and no two days are the same. We get to see our team online daily, as well as in person in the office on some days which is nice.

Have you had any learning opportunities since being at NHS SBS?

Every day is a learning opportunity within NHS SBS, and an opportunity to develop your skillset. We have daily meetings which every team member chairs on a rota basis, building our confidence in presenting. I’ve been given the chance to be a Great Place to Work (GPTW) Champion, which means I can network with others and help bring change by giving feedback from my colleagues on how to make it an even better place to work. I've also been trained as a Mental Health First Aider, focusing on supporting and optimising our colleague’s mental wellbeing.

NHS SBS is recognised as a Great Place to Work, what do you think make it so great?

The culture, the support, the openness to develop and grow. Feedback is always taken on board; improvements and changes are always happening. NHS SBS thrives to make this organisation a great place to work, having supportive managers and leaders, operating a hybrid work model that gives the work-life balance and the flexibility that many families need, and above all mental health is valued. We have access to lots of resources like wellbeing webinars and we have an employee assistance programme.  Every member of the team matters; you’re not just a number. Everyone is approachable, supportive and friendly.

What is the best career advice you can give to others?

Never give up, be patient, have a get-up-and-go attitude in life, be resilient, push forwards, learn from mistakes, take on any feedback in a positive light and use it as part of your learning curve to do bigger and better. With the right support and the right network of friends and colleagues around you, you will be exactly where you need to be.
