Two orange chairs and a spotlight
A conversation with Workforce Inclusion Manager, Meredith
I'm Meredith and I'm the Workforce Inclusion Manager for Sopra Steria’s Aerospace, Defence and Security (ADS) business. My job is to help ADS increase the diversity of its workforce and ensure that it is an inclusive workplace where everyone can succeed. I also support Sopra Steria’s wider commitments to social value, both within ADS and across the organisation.

What led you to this role?

I was encouraged to apply for this role by a former boss. It’s a shift in direction, as I was a career civil servant in Australia before moving to the UK 12 years ago and most of my experience there, and in the UK, is in technical services and cyber security delivery, as well as professional translation/interpretation (I am bilingual in Japanese/English).
However, I’ve always been interested in improving workplace culture and leadership. I like challenging the sentiment “We can’t do that because…” and seeing if I can shift it to “We could do that if…” It’s an important theme in diversity and inclusion.

What do you think makes Sopra Steria different to other companies in the industry?

I think Sopra Steria has the vision to invest in people with slightly unconventional career backgrounds – I’m a case in point! I also think it pays more attention to the ethical and environmental impact of its business. Above all, at Sopra Steria there is a tangible level of attention and interest from senior leadership, not just in our business but in employee welfare and wellbeing.

What training and development opportunities are available for new joiners in your team?

My team (ADS) will tailor training according to your need, including certified technical training where required. We also participate in the Sopra Steria-wide development programmes: IGNITE, for junior colleagues, and ELEVATE for emerging leaders, both of which get great feedback.

Would you recommend working here to others?

I think Sopra Steria is a particularly great employer for people like me who crave variety in what they do every day. People who care about their job incorporating social value (e.g., through volunteering) and who are interested in the ethical challenges surrounding the design, development and governance of increasingly powerful technology, would also thrive here.
